Amargosa River Description

The Amargosa River is an intermittent stream, approximately 200 mi (320 km) long, in southern Nevada and eastern California in the United States. It drains a high desert region northwest of Las Vegas into Death Valley, where it disappears into the ground. Except for a small portion of its route in the Amargosa Canyon in California, a small portion at Beatty, Nevada, the river flows only after a rare rainstorm washes the region. From Intestate 15 and the town of Baker, deep in the heart of California's Mojave Desert, head north 48 miles on State Highway 127 to Old Spanish Trail Road. Turn right and proceed approximately 3 miles to the small hamlet of Tecopa. At the intersection of Old Spanish Trail Road and Tecopa Hot Springs road, turn right on the unmarked road in the center of town. Proceed about 1/2 mile to the trailhead to the T&TR trail. More ambitious hikers can shuttle a vehicle approximately 6 miles via the Furnace Creek and China Ranch roads to the China Ranch trailhead, which intersects the T&TR railroad grade trail about 8 miles downstream from Tecopa. As a reward for this hardy trek, China Ranch offers its world famous date milkshakes. The best time to visit the Amargosa River country is between October and April. Trailheads are poorly marked and the trail is rough in many places. Camping and overnight facilities are available in the towns of Tecopa and Shoshone, as well as at the bed and breakfast inn at China Ranch. WARNING This is true desert country. Visitors should always check road conditions, carry plenty of water, and be prepared for a wide variety of inclement weather.
